New England And Chesapeake Colonies Essay Example For Students

New England And Chesapeake Colonies Essay Early English states in America scarcely looked like the association of people that would later battle against England and assemble another nation. Indeed, until the mid-eighteenth century, most English pioneers had practically nothing, in the event that anything to do with the pilgrims in neighboring settlements. They heard updates on Indian wars and other significant occasions, not from the state itself, however from England. The provinces in the New World showed up totally extraordinary and the possibility of any solidarity between them appeared to be unimaginable. The provinces in New England and the Chesapeake epitomize the numerous distinctions in the way of life and ways of life of the pioneers, made basically in view of the way that their establishing fathers had held separate aims when they went to the New World. The New England and Chesapeake provinces were both settled by outsiders from England, the New England states being established by the English from East Anglia, a zone in eastern England. Despite the fact that this was a territory flourishing with unassuming communities that they had commonly preferred, they chose to escape England because of strict oppression. Many families, men, ladies and their youngsters, came looking for a New World where they could rehearse their convictions openly. They established provinces, for example, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island as model Christian social orders. Their urban communities upon the slopes were guides, the lights, for those lost in the dimness of mankind, as John Winthrop implied by his acclaimed explanation. They shaped a general public of severe strict investment, in reality particularly taking after their country. To start with, many called themselves Puritans, and kept things straightforward and plain, focusing on what was essential to them. They utilized the network to accomplish their objectives, fabricating new towns and getting a charge out of the social part of their religion. Simultaneously, they were resolved to stay endeavoring to keep their locale profitable. They accepted the â€Å"idle hands† were the devil’s workshops. An issue that truly characterized a split between the social orders was the subjection struggle. The northerners in New England maintained their conviction that each man will be equivalent and nobody ought to be subjugated, while the southerners in the Chesapeake zone emphatically trusted in the utilization of servitude. Simultaneously the New Englanders attempted to help end subjection by lecturing others about the shameful acts, they worked tenaciously to make instruction in their general public solid. A great many people in the towns were proficient so they could peruse their Bibles and study them in detail with their loved ones. A few homesteaders were craftsmans or traders. Others were humble community ranchers, ensuring that each individual from the network had a sensible portion of God’s land. The northern settlements were eminent for being wealthy in hides, lumber and fish. They were particularly noted for forming into an extremely fruitful exchanging area. The New England settlements made up the white collar class society whose central focuses were family, instruction and religion. The general public remained non-free enterprise, yet still hummed with much action. Then again, the Chesapeake area had a â€Å"cash crop† get rich rapidly attitude. This privileged district comprised of Virginia and Maryland, two provinces that appeared to be exceedingly materialistic. Clearly, their lives depended more on their fluid resources than on God or family. The Englanders who saw the chance to exploit the ubiquity of a fresh out of the plastic new yield they had found settled the Chesapeake zone. These â€Å"gold diggers† were basically high society men of well off families seeking towards going to the New World to make an enormous benefit for themselves. These pilgrims were not escaping England looking for strict or social opportunity, yet unmistakably just to add more riches to their names. .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 , .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 .postImageUrl , .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 .focused content territory { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 , .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89:hover , .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89:visited , .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89:active { border:0!important; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 { show: square; progress: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-change: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; darkness: 1; change: mistiness 250ms; webkit-progress: obscurity 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89:active , .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89:hover { haziness: 1; change: murkiness 250ms; webkit-progress: darkness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 .focused content region { width: 100%; position: relat ive; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 .ctaText { fringe base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; text-design: underline; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; text style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89 .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; outskirt: none; fringe sweep: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe range: 3px; text-adjust: focus; text-improvement: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-tallness: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/basic arrow.png)no-rehash; position: outright; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1a d0e89 .focused content { show: table; tallness: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .ud18098459f06952c99a08e0da1ad0e89:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: graduate Essay Tobacco before long turned into the essential harvest seen developing on pretty much all of these affluent men’s ranches, which made gigantic measures of cash to add to their fortunes. Obviously pretty much every estate had African slaves chipping away at the land. These enormous homes came to rely upon their captives to run their homesteads and servitude turned into a typical, yet dreaded, lifestyle for some Africans. Shockingly for these Chesapeake states, because of damp land in a great part of the region, towns were not part of the scene or way of life as they were in the north. This territory was a position of furious rivalry with an exact moment feeling of network, rather than the flourishing northern provinces encompassed with warm and welcoming network towns. The solid spotlight on family, instruction or religion was not a fundamental feature in the lives of Chesapeake pilgrims, aside from in Maryland, where the Calvert family did in reality structure a shelter for Catholics. These two districts of the New England states and the Chesapeake provinces did in truth share the regular actuality that their pioneers were all of English cause. Obviously when they originally set sail, even before they arrived at the New World, they started to isolate into two unmistakably various social orders as of now. The obviously apparent explanation is on the grounds that these â€Å"pilgrims† went to the New World each seeking after something other than what's expected. The New England pilgrims were yearning to locate an increasingly appropriate place that is known for fresh chances to succeed where they could better their lives and addition strict opportunity. They needed especially to make a general public where they could concentrate on their family, religion and training. Where as the Chesapeake pioneers, they were obviously wanting to â€Å"strike gold† in the New World. Many trusted they could improve their societal position significantly more by increasing enormous benefits from developing and selling such things as tobacco. The New England pioneers came and made a very straightforward society and the Chesapeake settlers made an increasingly distinguished society. Their general public appeared to think more about their riches and influence more than anything, where as the New England society developed to be unified with significant focus’. These two locales may have shared that equivalent starting point and communicated in a similar English language, however they infrequently â€Å"spoke of comparable things. † Because of this culture obstruction, an isolated north and south was made, causing two particularly various social orders to develop. Nixon . McGovern was reelected to the Senate in 1974 and served as a U.S. delegate to the United Nations under Presidents Ford and Carter. He lost a bid for a fourth Senate term in 1980, and made an unsuccessful run for the 1984 Democratic presidential nomination. Under President Clinton, McGovern served as U.S. representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization. In 2001 he became the World Food Program's first global ambassador on hunger. Sonnet 30 Analysis - 934 Words

Misleading Love Although love can be kind and beautiful, it can cause some people to become blind and follow their hearts rather than think with their mind. â€Å"Sonnet 30† by Edmund Spenser dramatizes the conflict of a man’s burning desire to be with a woman who has no interest in him. Edmund Spenser uses the metaphorical comparisons of dramatically opposites, fire and ice. The man is fire, who is obsessed for this ice cold hearted woman, which returns nothing. The poem explains why this man can’t get this woman to love him back. The author uses stylistic devices, theme, and tone to emphasize how he cannot get the woman he deeply loves. The conflict is best represented by the lines, â€Å"How comes it then that this her cold so great is not†¦show more content†¦His desire to capture her love is huge. Spenser uses figurative language and his metaphors to illustrate this man’s desire. He also uses similes to compare his love to ice as it is to fi re. Only the fire, something strong and illusive, is what was used to illustrate the point of desire. The man in â€Å"Sonnet 30† by Edward Spenser was persistent and though failure does not know persistent, this man was denied the love of a woman, as his persistence continued and desires grew, the love of the woman was hidden away behind a cold, artic wall that grew colder along with the desires of the man. The man explains in depth using analogies and metaphors that his affection in life is often mistaken and misleading. Love, although sweet, can burn a hole through ones heart. That is one of the characteristics of love, it cannot be forced nor can I always go as your heart desires. The nature of love causes us to be misled and has the power to change natural occurrences, such as fire melting frozen ice. Although this man’s love burns with a passion, it is not enough to melt this woman’s ice cold heart. In other words, his desire is not nearly enough to captur e the heart of this woman, nor change her affection toward him. Through this poem, we must learn to accept this misfortunate reality of love and simply, moveShow MoreRelatedEssay about Shakespeares Sonnet 30 and Tennysons In Memoriam1302 Words   |  6 PagesLoss has been experienced over centuries and many poets have written on the subject. Analysis Of The Text Lady Audley s Secret - 824 Words

Explication Essay In the text â€Å"Lady Audley’s secret (1862)†, written by M. E. Braddon, there are many literary devices that came together to create a unique experience for the reader. The sentences in this text are purposely disconnected into eight lines. When reading a text that has sentences that are connected and flow fluently, it can be heard to determine key ideas. The text breaks up sentences so that key ideas are easily highlighted and specific words are emphasized. Within the eight lines, the author uses a unique sequence of events. The author begins the text by mentioning Talboys, and what he had done to Lady Audley. However, the author refrains from immediately saying who Talboys was in relation to her. Next the author explained,†¦show more content†¦In this line of the text the author also uses the word â€Å"thud†. The word thud is an onomatopoeia, meaning it is spelled the way it sounds as its action is taking place. This enhanced the ability to imagine the sound of the fall. Another instance where imagery is used is when the author uses detailed adjectives to illustrate the size and appearance of the well. Throughout the text the author uses the â€Å"mouth of the well† and the â€Å"cry† of Talboys as defining aspects of his death. Both are presented in multiple places in the text. Braddon used the mouth of the well in the fifth line when Audley initially attacked Talboys and in the eighth line when Talboys was confirmed to be dead. The cry of Talboys was used in the fifth and the seventh lines of the text. Both the mouth of the well and the cry mark the beginning of Talboys attack and the confirmation of his death. The one cry by Talboys also confirmed that his death happened instantly. Characterization plays a major role in the impact of the text. The main character Audley is depicted as an evil woman who killed her first husband without remorse and who threatens her new husband. Audley threatens her husband by explaining to him what she has done to ex-husband, who happened the treated her as he is now treating her. In other words she implied that he can possibly end up like her ex-husband, if he does not change the way he

Analysis Of Upton Sinclair s The Grapes Of Wrath

Contemporary society deems social class a division within a given population defined by wealth, education, and power, but the lines that divide them unceasingly deepen. Social mobility, or the movement of an individual between the stratification of societal classes, remains virtually illusory, an unattainable falsity that millions have laboriously fought for since the turn of the twentieth century. Monopolies and wage slavery remain definite and palpable, both of which contribute to immobility between social rankings, establishing an unbreakable cycle of poverty. The idyllic ethos of the American Dream, a belief that one will achieve success through hard work and opportunity, prove to be a fallacious, hollow and vague ambition that cannot be attained. Paradigms that exploit the plight of the â€Å"American worker† beginning in the early nineteen hundreds include muckraker Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. The quandaries that pl ague the characters of the aforementioned novels parallel that of modern day exposà ©s, such as Class Matters, by Bill Keller, Nickel and Dimed, by Barbara Ehrenreich, and Fast Food Nation, by Eric Schlosser, all of which harness and expose the falsehood of The American Dream as a result of wage slavery, class separation, and monopolization of major industries. The delineations that exist between the lower and upper class render the American Dream an empty, intangible delusion, unattainable to those enslaved by low wages

Analytical skills of Coca Cola Pvt Ltd Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Analytical skills of Coca Cola Pvt Ltd. Answer: Introduction Todays business managers are much more competitive, competent and knowledgeable. Earlier all a manager needs to do was just to co-ordinate between the higher end and the lower end but now their jobs have been diversified(kochar, 2013). A competent manager is one who has a number of qualities or skills. Todays managers are much more professionals in their respective fields(shah, 2011). However I feel if a manager is good at solving problems then it will affect the sub-ordinates and the organization in positive way. Problem solving skills are called analytical reasoning skills, through this skill manager or superiors gives appropriate solutions to very complex problems which ultimately results in the achievement of goals(YR, 2011). Skills are something that is the learnt ability of a human being, whereas competencies are something that are inbuilt in a person(lotey, 2010). If I get a chance to choose my career, I would choose to be a manager in Coca Cola Pvt Ltd. Literature Review We have chosen Analytical reasoning as a key skill that every manager must have, if a manager is not able to make decisions when the team or organization is in a problem then it will not only effects his sub-ordinates but it will also effects the results of the organization in a negative manner(ferida, 2013). Now as in the above paragraph I have choose to be a Manager in Coca Cola Pvt Ltd, the skill of Analytical reasoning is going to play a pivotal role in making the operations of an organization successful. The question is how? How this chosen skill will be pivotal for the Organization. It can be understood with a help of a simple statement that when a manager of a firm is capable of making decisions and is able to solve any problem on his own without putting its burden on the senior officer that is when this skill proves out to be beneficial as it not only saves the time of the organization but also makes a manager much more competent, courageous and experienced in his relative fi eld of actions. As you can see Analytical skills will not only motivates a manager to perform well but it will also helps in achieving the common goals or objectives of an organization(roosey, 2016). When in an organization an employee is facing any kind of issues, and if they go to their manager then manager will only solve such problems, if he has the ability to solve it and that is only possible if he is experienced in Analytical skills. In my opinion if a manager, superior, boss, anyone who has powers in his hands but is not capable of solving complex problems on his own, then it will automatically blocks the way of harmony into the organization as every single employee working under such superior will feel de-motivated as every time, if any problem will occur the superior will put it on the heads of his sub-ordinates just because he is not capable. Analytical reasoning or in simpler words Problem solving is an important managerial skill also(garg, 2015) If a manager or an employer is not compet ent in analytical skills then his organization has to face consequences in terms of failure in achieving the common goals. According to a study(ceden, 2013) Managers or employees having good analytical reasoning skills not only achieves the common goals but they also succeeds in achieving their personal goals such as (promotions, appraisal) etc. An organization works in a dynamic environment where every little thing changes within a period of time, change comes with a bundle of problems that are need to be taken care off, so employees that are not good enough in such problem solving will always show their resistance to these changes, on the other hand employees or managers that are highly experienced and good at solving any problem thrown at them will happily accept such change as a new challenge and will work to make situation controllable(Ragni, 2011). According to an article given in New York Times (Cetha, 2017) said that a manager or an employer who is capable of solving any com plex problem will never gets into any disputes with his sub-ordinates or with the rivalry firms, which will again benefits the organization as a less disputed firm is always carries a good image in public, whereas a firm with lots of disputes loss its goodwill in eyes of its shareholders and market. Analytical skills also make the employees less prone to mistakes which minimize the super visionary costs(YR, 2011). According to a study by (University, 2011) A survey was conducted on 200 entrepreneur, they were given 4 skills i.e. ( Analytical Reasoning, Communication, Decision Making and Critical Thinking) from which they have to choose one and out of 200 entrepreneurs 107 chose Analytical Reasoning as a desired skill in themselves. Hence Analytical reasoning proves to be much more useful skill that a manager or an employer must have in him/her. An image below shows how successful and happy employees looks like when are competent and capable of solving problems and bringing good name to the organisation: Another thing that an organization sees is the feeling of togetherness between employees which comes because of this problem solving skill. When an employee or a manager is good at solving problems, he will then help his colleagues in solving their problems whether at personal or professional level, this will bring a feeling of togetherness between them(Tiwari, 2013). Analysis Now coming on critical analysis of this topic here we will discuss how analytical skill will help in becoming a successful Entrepreneur, Manager or an Employee. Here we will understand this with the help of an example: In an organization there are 2 managers, lets say Manager X Manager Y, X is really good in analytical reasoning and he is also motivating. On the other hand Y has never solved any problem on his own and is not at all supportive. Now both X Y are assigned with a task, X has 5 members in his team , while Y has 7 members in his team. X as mentioned is himself a problem solver and really supportive so he took this task in a positive manner and started motivating and working together on the problems occurred and they all know that they will get equal appreciation for completing this task. On the other hand Y who is not at all supportive has ordered his 3 sub ordinates to work on the problems occurred and to the remaining he has ordered to work on something else. Ys sub-or dinates are afraid to speak in front of him about their needs or problems. On the day of submission of the task X and his team successfully completed the task, whereas Y and team failed to even complete 60% of the task. On asking the reason of failure Y without even taking any responsibility he put the burden of failure on the shoulders of his team. Now who actually took the burden of the failure? The Managers? The Sub Ordinates? No, it was owner (Entrepreneur) of the firm who actually bear the loss of the failure. What was the reason of the failure of the task? It was the incompetency of the manager that resulted in the failure(University, 2011). Now we will talk about competence A group of linked abilities, obligation, information and skills that enables an individual to perform successfully and proficiently(ferida, 2013). In simpler words competency may known as a group of skills(Jaspal, 2015). Competency is in-built while skills are mostly learnt. Analytical Reasoning is a skill that comes under Behavioral Competency, because problem solving comes from within. Conclusion Here I have provided a brief but a detailed conclusion that will clear all your doubts and questions, if someone asks me if I have mastered the skill of problem solving then I would say Yes. To prove my answer I will here write my experience, I was working as a Floor Manager In LT Corp, there were 4 members in my team who were my sub ordinates, all of them were freshers. Many times we were assigned with tasks that sound impossible to achieve but as their superior it was my sole responsibility to make them work according to our requirements. Having freshers on my side made my work much more challenging and problems were arising at every interval but it was my skill that helped me a lot in solving such multifarious problems, and because of my skill of analytical reasoning me and my team won 4 awards consecutively for 3 years for excellent working and task achieving. As I have mastery in Problem Solving, similarly I do lack in Communication skill and time management skill, which I am tr ying to reach the level of perfection. Bibliography ceden. (2013). Character Analysis of Molieres Comedy Tartuffe

Character Analysis of Moliere's Comedy Tartuffe Written by Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (better known as Molià ¨re), Tartuffe was first performed in 1664. However, its run was cut short because of the controversy surrounding the play. The comedy takes place in Paris in the 1660s and pokes fun at gullible people who are easily fooled by Tartuffe, a hypocrite who pretends to be deeply moral and religious. Because of its satirical nature, religious devotees felt threatened by the play, censoring it from public performances. Tartuffe the Character Although he does not appear until half-way through Act One, Tartuffe is discussed extensively by all of the other characters. Most of the characters realize that Tartuffe is a loathsome hypocrite who pretends to be a religious zealot. However, the wealthy Orgon and his mother fall for Tartuffe’s illusion. Before the action of the play, Tartuffe arrives at Orgon’s house as a mere vagrant. He masquerades as a religious man and convinces the master of the house (Orgon) to stay as a guest indefinitely. Orgon begins to adhere to Tartuffe’s every whim, believing that Tartuffe is leading them on the pathway to heaven. Little does Orgon realize, Tartuffe is actually scheming to steal away Orgon’s home, Orgon’s daughter’s hand in marriage, and the fidelity of Orgon’s wife. Orgon, The Clueless Protagonist The protagonist of the play, Orgon is comically clueless. Despite the warnings from family members and a very vocal maid, Orgon devotedly believes in Tartuffe’s piety. Throughout most of the play, he is easily duped by Tartuffe – even when Orgon’s son, Damis, accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Orgon’s wife, Elmire. Finally, he witnesses Tartuffe’s true character. But by then it is too late. In an effort to punish his son, Orgon hands over his estate to Tartuffe who intends to kick the Orgon and his family out into the streets. Fortunately for Orgon, the King of France (Louis XIV) recognizes Tartuffe’s deceitful nature and Tartuffe is arrested at the end of the play. Elmire, Orgons Loyal Wife Although she is often frustrated by her foolish husband, Elmire remains a loyal wife throughout the play. One of the more hilarious moments in this comedy takes place when Elmire asks her husband to hide and observe Tartuffe. While Orgon watches in secret, Tartuffe reveals his lustful nature as he tries to seduce Elmire. Thanks to her plan, Orgon finally figures out just how gullible he has been. Madame Pernelle, Orgons Self-Righteous Mother This elderly character begins the play by chastising her family members. She is also convinced that Tartuffe is a wise and pious man and that the rest of the household should follow his instructions. She is the last one to finally realize Tartuffe’s hypocrisy. Mariane, Orgons Dutiful Daughter Originally, her father approved of her engagement to her true love, the handsome Valà ¨re. However, Orgon decides to cancel the arrangement and compels his daughter to marry Tartuffe. She has no desire to marry the hypocrite, yet she believes that a proper daughter should obey her father. Valà ¨re, Marianes True Love Headstrong and madly in love with Mariane, Valà ¨re’s heart is wounded when Mariane suggests they call off the engagement. Fortunately, Dorine, the crafty maid, helps them patch things up before the relationship falls apart. Dorine, Marianes Clever Maid The outspoken maid of Mariane. Despite her humble social status, Dorine is  the wisest and wittiest character in the play. She sees through Tartuffe’s schemes more readily than anyone else. And she is not afraid to speak her mind, even at the risk of being scolded by Orgon. When open communication and reasoning fail, Dorine helps Elmire and the others come up with their own schemes to expose Tartuffe’s wickedness.

Critically explore the strengths and limitations of case study Essay

Critically explore the strengths and limitations of case study research with children and young people in exploring issues of race and ethnicity - Essay Example y looking at past works by Ince (2004) that focused on a small group of young black people leaving care as well as Maniam’s et al (2004) study on various methods that can be used in exploring issues of race and ethnicity. Research with children and young people is critical. It can advance understanding of how they develop and live, can contribute to theoretical debates, and its outcomes can impact directly and indirectly on the lives of those researched and others in similar situations. In this case, the study focuses on young people as well as children in reference to issues of race and ethnicity. The function of case study method in research becomes more outstanding when social issues such as drug abuse, racial segregation, poverty and ethnicity are considered. Prominence of case studies as a research technique gained recognition when researchers started raising more and more concerns regarding the limitations of quantitative methods. This was particularly in availing holistic and in-depth explanations for social and behavioral conditions. Superiority of case studies lies in the fact that the research approach incorporates both quantitative and qualitative data; these sets of data are utilized to elucidate both the procedure and result of a phenomenon through comprehensive observation, reconstruction and analysis of the case study under scrutiny. Ince (2004) carried out a qualitative research with a small group of black care leavers, through the research she demonstrated the young blacks’ identity problems resulting from their limited contact with their families and community. The research also brought to the forefront the impacts of racism as well as open and indirect discrimination in these children’s lives. Maniam et al (2004) seemed to favor use of case studies as he stated that bringing forth qualitative data on racism would be one way of researchers wittingly colluding with racism. He cited that to overcome inadequacies that have resulted due to a

Red Ocean and Blue Ocean Approach

Red Ocean and Blue Ocean Approach Introduction â€Å"Blue Ocean Strategy† by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne is a strategy that challenges companies to distance itself away from fierce competition by establishing uncontested market space that makes existing competition irrelevant. One of the reasons why the authors have used the colours red and blue is to describe the market. Red ocean is the market space where industry boundaries are defined and known. The red ocean contains a massive conflict between companies where they are constantly trying to outperform each other to achieve a greater share or demand. Kim and Mauborgne explains in an interview that when market spaces become crowded with competitors, companies try out perform each other and profits and growth is greatly reduced due to cutthroat style competition which turns the red ocean bloody. In contrast, blue oceans is the unknown market space where it is unaffected by competition and demand is created rather than fought for. In blue oceans, competition is not relevant because the rules or barriers to the market space is not set yet and is often waiting to be set. The Authors uses the blue ocean analogy to describe the uncontested market space with no competitors and the opportunity to explore. The analogy of a blue ocean can be associated with profitability and growth being â€Å"vast†, â€Å"deep† and â€Å"powerful†. Traditional approaches to competitive strategies are highly influenced by Michael E. Porter. Kim and Mauborgne present to us in their book a fresh approach to make the competition irrelevant. In this paper I will discuss the differences between conventional red ocean strategies which are influenced by Porter and Kim and Mauborgnes blue ocean strategy. Furthermore, the paper will discuss the differences between the SWOT analysis and the four actions framework. Competing in existing market space versus Creating new market space The red ocean represents the existing market space where there is always a constant intensity of rivalry to fight for market share. To successfully operate in a red ocean, it is important for companies to conduct competitor analysis to allow them to stay updated on what their competitors are doing and what they are planning to do. Red ocean strategies represent approaches to protecting and stealing market share from competitors. According to DAveni, market share can be stolen by companies satisfying their competitors customers better. To compete in the existing market space, companies need to mould their services or products in line with the customers liking through refining existing products or creating new to the world products. However, the bloody cutthroat competition of the red ocean most often causes companies to develop similar or replications of products or services of the competitor that has done well. In the red ocean where competition is based on price and quality, being a first mover is an important advantage because by being flexible a company can adjust easily to external changes such as customer demands and trends. By being a first mover, the company gets benefits such as low costs and economies of scale. I think this is also the reason why the red ocean is so bloody because similar products and services have been refined and replicated over and over again with low cost, it has caused companies to be afraid to look into new options and therefore in a constant battle to fight for market share by cutting profit margins lower and lower. For the companies that succeed in gaining a competitive advantage by being a first mover, it is important for them to exploit the opportunity of that advantage as much as they can because very soon the competition will catch on to it. The tradition theory to competing in existing market space is focused on building your company through analysing competitors. In contrast, Blue Ocean refers to all the industries that are not in existent. In the opening chapter of the Blue Ocean Strategy book, Kim and Mauborgne suggest that the only way to beat the competition is to stop trying to beat the competition. This is a complete contrast to conventional red ocean strategies because instead of analysing competitors, and try out perform them, Blue Ocean Strategy encourage companies to differentiate or break away from the existing market space, hence making competition irrelevant. The authors suggest that there are many ways to create blue oceans. In few cases, companies can establish completely new industries. An example of this is what eBay did with online auctioning. Blue ocean strategy says a company can create a blue ocean market space by innovating a new product or service mainly focusing on new to the world services. However I believe developing new to the world services come with high risk and expenses but if done correctly can be very profita ble. Kim and Mauborgne argue that most companies tend to adapt to new trends rather than trying to shape new trends. What the authors mean by this is that companies make actions directed at keeping up with trends and dont look across time or look at the big picture. They argue that to create a untapped market space, companies need to find trends that are observable today and look at the big picture and see what happens to the value it will have in the future. A prime example of how a company successfully executed this strategy would be Apple. Apple studied and monitored the growing trend of music sharing over the internet during the last decade through software used illegally such as LimeWire and Kazaa. The trend of music sharing became clear to Apple and they took the opportunity and created the online iTunes music store in 2003 which distributed music legally. Red Ocean and Blue Ocean approach to industry boundaries Red ocean markets are large and the rate of product innovation is low. Therefore the market is usually heavily populated by competition and there are a set of rules that is known. In the hostile red ocean environment, companies strive to outperform each other in order to control market share and demand. As the market space gets crowded, growth and profits are greatly reduced and a price war is begun. Competition based strategies have been the main fundamentals of strategic thinking over the past decades and as a result, most companies benchmark themselves towards competition. In contrast, blue ocean strategy emphasises on finding and exploiting market space. The authors argue that companies must realise that in order to be successful long-term, they need to stop competing and benchmarking the competition. It is important for companies to view the competition from a broad perspective and consider industries that produce alternatives with the same functions and forms to satisfy the end customer. According to Kim and Mauborgne, most companies concentrate on improving the competitive position within a segment and focus on outperforming competition in the same segment. They argue that is it imperative to understand the actions of competitors in other segments not only the one your company is in. To be able to create a blue ocean environment, companies need to understand the factors that influence the customers decisions to change segments such as price and performance. Blue ocean strategy also focuses on looking across chain of buyers. By changing the industry tradition of which buyer group to target and looking across the chain of buyers, companies can get an insight on how to focus on overlooked groups of buyers. Kim and Mauborgne discuss the importance of considering the whole chain of buyers including purchasers, actual users and influencers. By focusing on all of these groups the company can break away form the competition and create a blue ocean environment and the competition would become irrelevant because the industry boundaries are waiting to be created. An example of an Australian organisation that has used this strategy is wine manufacturer Casella Wines. Casella Wines broke free from the boundaries of the domestic competition and moved towards the US market through implementing blue ocean strategy and targeting a segment which was not tainted yet which was the non-wine drinking population. Differentiation and Cost cutting The traditional red ocean view focuses on the importance of creating just one competitive advantage. Porter (1980) has developed recognised theories that describe the three types of competitive strategies as cost leadership, differentiation and focus. Porter emphasises the danger of a company being in the middle of the strategies and the importance of clearly selecting one strategy. If an organisation tries to operate with multiple strategies, it will supposably lose its competitive advantage and focus.

The Soaring Juvenile Crime Rate :: juvenile delinquency crime

The Soaring Juvenile Crime Rate   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It is comforting to know that, according to recent crime statistics, crime rates are dropping among adults. However, for teens the crime rate is soaring. Between 2000 and 2004, the rate at which adults age 25 and older committed homicides declined 22%; yet the rate jumped 16% for youths between 14 and 17. This age group surpassed the 18 - 24-year-old group in the early 2000's as the most crime-prone. (Between 1966 and 2001, 18 - 24 showed a 62% increase in homicides; 14 - 17 showed a 124% increase in murders.) It is this age group that will be booming in the next decade (currently 39 million under 10).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  However, the American Civil Liberties Union, in a fact sheet on juvenile crime published in mid May of this year, stated that contrary to public perception, the percentage of violent crimes committed by juveniles is low. According to one estimate, only 13% of violent crimes are committed by young people (Gallup Poll Monthly, Sept. 2004). The ACLU further suggests that the public also holds greatly inflated perceptions about the violence of today's juveniles, claiming only about 0.5% of young people commit violent crimes. ( ³ Crime Time Bomb, ² U.S. News & World Report, March 25, 2006)   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Current social trends do little to contradict the dire predictions made about youth crime rates. Nearly all the factors that contribute to youth crime -- single-parent households, child abuse, deteriorating inner-city schools -- are getting worse. At the same time, government is doing less (spending less) to help break the cycle of poverty and crime.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Predicting a generation ¹s future crime pattern is, of course, risky. Especially when outside factors remain unpredictable (Will drug use be up or down? Will gun laws be tightened?). Also, from year to year, crime rates can fluctuate much like the stock market. What goes up generally comes down, and what goes down generally comes back up.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It is probably no surprise to hear that crime rates among juveniles vary across race (structural limitations/discrimination, self-fulfilling prophecy, etc.). Minorities, especially Blacks, have a higher arrest rate for violent

Virgin Usa – Pricing Strategy

Marketing [pic] Virgin USA Francesco Marani Problem Statement Virgin mobile is entering the US mobile market. Low brand recognition in USA and limited financial resources for advertisement represents a constraint because to enter successfully in such a market Virgin needs to swiftly attract its potential target customer, in order to establish a critical mass and financial strength to defend itself from incumbent and/or other potential entrants (price-wars, dumping, etc†¦). The profile of target customers, youth in between 15 and 29 years old with low credit credentials and high income / price elasticity (sensitivity to changes in price and income), is in conflict with the need to retain customers for a minimum period of 17 months as currently in the market ($ 370 / [52-30] = 17), in order to breakeven recovering the Cost per Acquisition (CPA). Situation Analysis Competition – the Mobile Industry in USA: there are 6 national carriers, as well as other small regional providers. The market is overcrowded, mature, highly competitive and concentrated (3 largest carriers covering about 59% of the market – Exhibit 1); requiring large capital expenditure (CAPEX). High churn rate contribute to create uncertainty on the profitability of clients particularly because the carriers are perceived as utility providers rather than service providers. Advertisement expenditure by market leaders is high in order to capture unsatisfied customers. Customer – Market: Most of the new subscribers of mobile services (117 Mln in 2001) opt for a contractual agreement with mobile carriers, which implies hat the bulk of customers are locked into an agreement and potentially dissatisfied. Carriers make money with hidden fees, taxes and unexpected charge (calls during peak time and in excess of monthly allowance). Customer confusion, dissatisfaction and homogenous offer could be some of the reason behind the significant churn rate. We can assume that a significant chunk of the remaining subscribers (13 Mln) are mainly concentrated within the younger part of the population, in many instance unable to sign up for a contract given their lower credit credentials. Virgin aims at attracting 1 Mln of subscriber on the first year and is partnering with MTV, specialized magazines and selected trendy stores consistently with its target customers. Company – Virgin Value Preposition: The Virgin brand in other European market is associated to value for money, innovation, a hip and trendy image, and also ability to shake industry convention and status-quo. Virgin is planning to enter the USA market aggressively, where it has almost no brand recognition, focusing on understanding and meeting customer needs rather than operating the physical infrastructure (MVNO approach). By trying to differentiate its offer and value preposition from the flat and boring offer of established carrier Virgin is trying to change the concept and the perception of such service. Final goal would be reducing dissatisfaction and hence the churn rate, potentially increase the average spending per customers by in other entertainment services. Context: Virgin target customers are the youth between 15 and 29 years old, with less stable economic and consumer behavior, but a higher attitude to spend. On a comparative basis, penetration rate is expected to growth the most on Virgin’s target customer. Additionally revenues generated by entertainment services are expected to grow exponentially (annual growth above 100%) creating an additional revenue stream. Alternatives Clone the industry Prices: Adopting the same price structure available in the market seems to be a strategy consistent with the need of a simple communication, while differentiation will be based on transparency, attention to customer needs and additional services. Such price replicating strategy can be difficulty defendable in the long term. The owners of the network infrastructure, which in some instances is also a provider of mobile services, could easily cross-subsidize their mobile business and reduce its CPA to compete aggressively with Virgin, neutralizing its strategy given their superior rental network cost advantage. Any price war is likely to create an immediate change in customer preferences, in particular Virgin’s target customer (15- 29 years) is likely to be strongly affected given their traditional high sensitivity to prices change (price elasticity typically high). Price below the Competition: The option to adopt a quasi-similar pricing structure, with an exception for the bucket of consumption in between 100 and 300 minutes, has the same pros and cons of the one before mentioned, in addition to increase the probability of triggering an aggressive competitive reaction by incumbent (price wars). Both the above options fail to address three significant aspects: ? The high churn rate, which is one of the main problems in the service industry, is not addressed by any of the mentioned strategy. The limited advertisement budget may fail to create an impact and convey rapidly a clear message to any potential customers. ? The post-paid contract may be difficult to implement using the planned distribution channel. Lower sales commission could also implies less prepared sales representatives, which may fail to properly complete paperwork related to credit checks. Recommendations Virgin should adopt a brand new approach entering the mobile market to quick ly capture the favor of unhappy customers, as well as people unable to sign a contract given their low credit credentials. No contracts (pre-paid only), no hidden fees & taxes, an aggressive price strategy within the 100 – 300 minutes of consumption as a monthly allowance, with no difference between peak and off-peak charges. The average cost per minute in the industry is at the moment around 12 cents ($ 52 average bill per month / 417 min). By analyzing different possible scenario, including different retention rates and rebates in line with the market (Exhibit 2), Virgin can produce a positive Lifetime Value (LTV) offering a tiered price structure, by charging 0. 19cents for monthly usage below 100 minutes, 0. cents in between 100 and 200 minutes, or 0. 06cents between 200 and 300. This solution has been obtained by resolving the LTV formula, leaving the price as an incognita, and assuming a 6% churn rate, a rebate from client of the mobile cost at $30 (using similar proportion of rebate as other competitors), ? PROs: difficult to be replicated by competitors in the market in the short term. It best suits the need of youth people unable to pass credit checks, as well as teenagers and parents needs because it naturally limit their maximum spending in advance. LTV positive since the beginning and CPA at $160 (refer to the next section for further consideration on the CPA). Virgin can further reduce the cost per minute charges if we increase the upfront cost billed to customer for the phone (Exhibit 3), in case competitors start competing aggressively. ? CONs: pre-paid are typically associated with higher churn rate, which can result in a net loss for the carriers before having recovered the CPA. Pre-paid customer in some instances use the mobile phone less than traditional users. An appropriate (easy to reach and cheap) infrastructure needs to be in place to recharge the phone. Implementation Plan Price: an aggressive tiered price strategy, with price decreasing at increased consumption simple to communicate and sensitively lower than competitors (Exhibit 4). Any minutes in excess of 300 minutes can be charged at the same cost per minute applied for the 200 – 300 minutes of monthly consumption. No difference between peak and off-peak charges. Contract: no contract, no hidden fees and taxes. Every user will be charged only an upfront cost for the phone, which in an aggressive scenario is set at $30, (i. e. half of the minimum amount currently charged by other carriers – Exhibit 5). Communication: Virgin is entering the USA mobile market using selected affiliated partner (MTV, selected magazine, etc) consistent with its target customers. The planned advertisement investment is $60 Mln, lower than competitors, but significant for a new entrant. If we consider such t investment as a cost, the total CPA is around $160 (Exhibit 2). Nevertheless, from a financial perspective we should consider the $60 million initial investment as the only CAPEX required, which need to be remunerated by taking into account the company and market risk. If we assume a 16% rate of return on the CAPEX we would reduce the CPA at 109. 6 (Exhibit 6), close to the condition to make the present plan viable according to Morgan Stanley research. Success implementation of the strategy require Virgin entering and impacting its target customer swiftly, in order to build a critical mass and financial strength before being able to face any price-wars. Breakeven: currently the industry break-even is 17months. If we assume average consumption around 417 minutes per month, we can see that the breakeven will be significantly lower, and around 5 month. In the present calculation we have neither considered any extra revenues generated by VirginXtras, nor a reduction in the churn rate as a likely consequence of the improved customer satisfaction. Redu cing the churn rate is probably one of the most important objectives in the mobile industry sectors, also because gives additional space for price reduction as demonstrated (Exhibit 2, 3, 6). Exhibit 1 [pic] Exhibit 2 [pic] * Assuming 1 Mln of customers. $60 Mln /1 Mln customers = $ 60 per customer Exhibit 3 Intermediate Rebate [pic] Maximum Rebate [pic] * Assuming 1 Mln of customers. $60 Mln /1 Mln customers = $ 60 per customer Exhibit 4 Price Advantage against Market Average Prices [pic] *Mkt Adv = Market price per minute – Virgin price per minute. Exhibit 5 [pic] Exhibit 6 [pic] * Considering the investment on advertisement as a capital expenditure, with a 16% annual rate of return. ($60 Mln /1 Mln customer x 0. 16 = $ 9. 6

The British Obstinacy and Persistence With Their System of Operation Free Essay Example, 1500 words

The divided roles played by solicitors and barristers in the U. K. have put in question the need at all for the division. Until recently, there were 4,800 barristers and 44,000 solicitors in the U. K. There does not appear to be more room for barristers and fresh barristers are finding it difficult getting cases (Cohen, Professor Harry; p10). Solicitors, on the other hand, engage fresh talents and are on the lookout for skills to enhance their marketability. It is possible for solicitors to become barristers and vice versa after going through a short course. However, the flow is greater in the barrister to solicitor transition. The differences are in the solicitor s ability to make contracts with his client for a fee which a barrister cannot do. The solicitor also deals directly with the client which again a barrister cannot do as he has to get the client routed through the solicitor. A solicitor is an officer of the court whereas a barrister is not subject to the control of the co urt although the barrister could be disbarred for any professional misconduct. The similarities are both enjoy legal immunity in respect of actions and statements made during the lawful conduct of their clients lawsuit. The Law Society s pleas are not falling on deaf ears because it is through their efforts that the lines of differences between solicitors and barristers are beginning to blur (Types of Legal Career, 2010).
